We gotta STOP these DEFORMED LEGS from spreading in our goat herd 🤕
Each morning on our one acre farm in the city of Phoenix, Arizona, we start the day with milking goats, feeding pigs, and gathering eggs. We have a small plot of land, but boy, do we make the most of it. Each animal on our farm is taken care of holistically & organically. We let the mama goats raise their babies until they reach 10 weeks of age and are naturally weaned from nursing. We keep a small herd of 5-7 milking goats, mainly the Nigerian Dwarf breed, although we still have the queen of the herd, Luna, our Nubian goat. We use the fresh goat's milk to make cheese, butter, cream, and we use it in all sorts of baking & cooking. We love that we can walk into our backyard and gather food. It's the best feeling ever!
After the morning chores, we usually tend to the pond -- we're always adding new pond plants and fish to maintain the delicate ecosystem of our natural swimming pool. Our backyard farm is full of adventures, and we're so happy to share our farm vlog with you. Hopefully you can feel inspired to grow something of your own, or care for an animal with kindness like we strive to do. Thanks for watching!

Goat Biology3 oy oldin
I question the decision that your two goats have carpal hyperextension. This is unknown in goats, but common in dogs and cats. The carpal bones in goats are actually what looks like the knee. The metacarpals below the knee are fused. The phalanges (what would be like human fingers) are above the hoof. I would suspect that your two goats have chronic laminitis in the one hoof if fed a high carbohydrate diet usually from feeding high amounts of grain. This permanently damages the rumen wall allowing bacteria to enter the system causing infection and inflammation in the hoof. Feeding high carb alfalfa on top of grain will add to the problem. There really isn't any kind of genetic ability or disability to utilize minerals. The main cause of disease in goats is improper feeding of too high amount of carbs and too low amount of high fiber roughage.
Penny Gardner3 oy oldin
Maybe it would be a good idea to not breed him out And possibly make him a wether/companion so no problems in the future. Even though it looks like his legs are strong but he may carry the gene. He was able to be a buck for awhile but maybe not long term?
Weed 'em & Reap3 oy oldin
Penny’s does bend backwards on both legs at the knee - even worse in the one she doesn’t use. I’m confident it’s not laminitis at all. Willow’s is an early presentation of it and 2 doelings out of Penny that I’ve sold to two different farms have both developed it as well. It is indeed genetic.
Goat Biology3 oy oldin
@Weed 'em & Reap That's good news - on the grain. Most people do feed too much grain to goats. She doesn't have carpal hyperextension. If she did her leg would bend backwards at the knee - and there is no such thing in goats. The way the one goats holds her leg up looks like she is having some pain in the leg or foot. Providing mineral salt to goats is important so that they get selenium and copper and a few other important trace minerals. Over feeding minerals or feeding too many different combinations of minerals could cause an imbalance. Pick one and leave it at that. Having goats shouldn't break the bank. They are really pretty easy. A similar thing happens in cattle where the calves are born with short, bowed legs. They are not sure what causes it but they think it is nutritional. In some cases they are low in manganese. It is called CCUO in cattle if you want to look up more information. There is a lot more research done in cattle than goats. I would not worry that it is genetic. It might be a good idea to have the alfalfa tested for nutrients - or toxins.
Weed 'em & Reap3 oy oldin
Interesting. We’ve always fed our goats a very low carbohydrate diet. Only the milkers get grain and very little at that. No extra treats either except for garden veggies.

Is it possible to correct genetics with minerals ? I mean even if willow's legs are in top shape by the time she is ready to breed, will it mean that she will not pass that genetic condition to her kids?
